GREAT BRITAIN'S TRADE.
FINE RECOVERY MADE. MARKETS WITHIN EMPIRE. LONDON, July 8. Mr Kellaway, representing the Overseas Trade Department, addressing a representative assemblage of British exporters, .-aid that; without tho great overseas trade, Britain could neither c10t!...- nor feed her people. Tii! en'oct of the war on overseas trade had been revolutionary and disastrous. If was only bv the restoration of such trade that Britain could hope to resume her position in the world. While he did not underestimate the part: America and Japan had played in the war. he said that those countries had been able to secure markets which once were the monoply of Britain. However, since the armistice the progress made by British industry was such that they triigbi bo proud of. In the first five mouths of this year our exports were within 20 per cent, of the value of our exports in 1913. end the percentage to Europe had expanded from 33 to 48, but there had been a reduction in the exports to countries outside Europe. They looked with hope towards the Empire markets, and he urged the exporters to use their resources io satisfy the Imperial markets. Sir Thomas Mackenzie said thai the <x porience of the past showed that the Americans were more adaptable in conforming to the wishes of colonial customers than the British manufacturers. He hoped to see a larger measure of preferential treatment employed.—(A. and N.Z cable).
