DEFAULTING JURORS’ FINED.
JUDGE’S STRONG COMMENTS

At the Waterford Assizes, Judge Gibson descanted bitterly when nine jurors appeared out of seventy-eight summoned, because they had received a notice threatening that their lives, property, women and children would not be protected in future by tho law. “ It makes my blood run cold,” said Judge Gibson. “It is horrible that any Irishman should bo so weak. r I he prisoners will remain in custody, and the guilty vvill go unpunished.” The Judge defined the jurors default as “ a crime againstjGod and man,’’ and fined each grand juror £IOO, special juror £25, and petty juror £lO. There were also a hundred petty jurors fined m the County Court. The Irish Times declares that the Waterford fines mark the end and the beginning of a chapter in Irish history. It states that the jurors have the choice of facing tho imposition of qn organisation which hits hard, hits surely, and keeps the whole provinces in servitude and fear. Freeman’s Journal quotes Cardinal Loguc as stating that tho Pope sympathised with Ireland’s national aspirations, but ho added that the Pontiff declared that they would never attain them through crime, bloodshed or conduct that brought God’s ourso on them.—(A. and N.Z. cable). MILITARY WITNESS KIDNAPPED. Received July 9, 9.20 a.m. ‘LONDON, July 7. A military sergeant, who;was really the principal witness in a mqrcler trial at Armagh, following a policeman’s death, was kidnapped from a street. A search has failcd to disclose his whereabouts, (A. and N.Z. cable).
