A LICENSING APPLICATION.

The application for a liquor license at Malamata in place of the license dropped at Maketu by the non-payment of t.;e amount of the fee came’before the Licensing Committee hero. The case has aroused considerable public interest on account of the method adopted, making it possible to transfer a license more than one mile Mr Peed K.C., of Auckland, with Mr H. Sharp,' of Tauranga. appeared for the apant (Mr A. Montgomery), and seven otlTor legal gentlemen represented various parties. Mr "Reed, in a long opening address, pointed out (ho great need of addi tional accommodation at Malamata, and stressed the advantage of having licensed premises under control of the Licensing Committee, instead of the present motnod of obtaining liquor in bulk from the outside disnicts, with the attendant evils. There are some sixteen witnesses to examine, and tho hearing will no doubt lie protracted.
