The appointment of Mr Frank D. Thompon as clerk of the Executive Council, in succession to Mr J. F. Andrews, is gazetted. Mr Thomas J. Quayle has been appointed Deputy Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages at Otaki. . The death occurred at Linwood this week at the age of 97 yoars of Mr Alfred White, formerly a bookseller in Christchurch, from which business bo retired 22 years ago. Mr P. A. Wallwork, District Health Officer at Dannevirke, was admitted to hospital on Wednesday suffering from a severe attack of pneumonia. Mr Henry Frederick Davis, who died at Wellington on Wednesday, aged 70 years, formerly took a leading part in volunteering activities, and was awarded the territorial decoration for long and efficient sei vice. Mr J. B. Davis, of Fulding, is u son of deceased. Mr W. F. Alexander, who has been editor of the Timaru Herald (or the past 10 years, lias been appointed editor of the Dunedin Evening Star an from December Ist next. The lion. Mark Cohen, who is at present, editor of the Stay, will retire from teat position at. the beginning of December. An enthusiastic gathering of his Stratford district supporters entertained Mr J. B. Hine. tho ex-member, and presented him with a cheque for £IOOO. ’lhe. Prime Minister sent a message expressing the hope that Mr Hine would again he in Parliament. This is the second presentation made to Mr Hine, the nor them end of the electorate having already presented him with £651). At a social function held in Pahiatua on Wednesday night the Mayoress (Mrs J. D. C. Crowe) was presented by the Returned Soldiers’ Association with a German 7.7 shell case, Hanked with rifles and with tho Huahino Regiment badge in tho centre. The presentation was made in recognition of Mrs Crew’s services during the war
period. A resolution was passed by Woodiillo residents, who met last evening to elect a frosh school committee, con nit uniting Mi Stevenson on his promotion to be an inspector of schools for the Hawke s Bay district. Mr Stevenson had boon headmaster of the Woodville School for nearly 29 years, and the residents expressed their high appreciation of Ids services during that time. Constable Andrews, who was recently transferred to Hawera, after six years of service in the local police force, was the recipient of a presentation lit the police station this morning. On behalf of the members, Senior*'Sergt. Fraser presentee the constable with a shaving outfit anti expressed regret at Ids departure. De-tective-Sergt. Quirke and Sorgt. Fitzpatrick also spoke of tho esteem m which Constable Andrews is held, and wished him luck in Ids new post. The death has taken place of an old identity in the person of Mr Oliver Fitzgerald. aged 78 years. Deceased was an early resident of fids district, and was an employee for many years on the railway between here and Wanganui, retiring in his latter years on superannuation. He was predeceased by Ids wife and leaves a grown-up family of two sons and three daughters. The funeral will take place to-morrow, leaving St. Patrick s Chinch at 2 p.m. A lot of interest is naturally aroused by the appearance of a juvenile artist with the talent of little Meg Cimino, who made her first appearance in this town last evening. It is of interest to note that she is u native of Wellington, where she has recently become extremely popular, and her stage experience extends only to a few appearances with the Alsace Company in the South Island. It is tho intention of tier mother. Mrs E. Cimino, recently a school teacher, who is also her till* ll ', to make u tour of Australia. Bums, who has been a member of the local branch of the Railway Department for some time past, has been transferred to Auckland and left last night to take up his now duties. On Wednesday evening Mr Binns was farowelled by members of the Palmerston North Tennis Club, of which he was secretary. In presenting Mr Binns with a purse of sovereigns on behalf of the members, Dr. Hooper observed Ih«t the present sound financial position ol the chib was largely due to tho work of Mr Binns. Eulogistic reference was also made to Mrs Binns us an. enthusiastic c ub member, and the best wishes of the club were extended to each.. Mr C 11. Lowen followed in similar strain and the recipient suitably acknowledged the gift. Tho late Mr S. Thacker who disappeared from tlie Monowai while that vessel was on route from Gisborne to Auckland last Hundav morning, was. a, native pi Dunedin, and had been a resident of Gisborne for eight years, having left « «"* ston North for that town. He had been an enthusiastic follower of sport, in ms younger days taking part m running and cycling contests, and latterly upholding a good game as a member of tho Upborne Bowling Club (says the Poverty Bay Herald). For tho past six or seven months Mr Thacker had been a member ot tno committee of the Gisborne Retailers association, acting as the representative ol the boot trade thereon. For some time Ins health had not been good and had be n the cause of anxiety to his family. Un tlio passage to Auckland he was accompanied Lv Mrs Thacker. There is a « three daughters. Mr Thacker, hud always held un excellent position as a Kent am straightforward business man, a i * many friends in Gisborne.
