HOROWHENUA (16) v. MANAWATU (Sf. FIRST REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES.

An interesting, although rather onesided game of Rugby was played at Levin on Saturday when the Horowhcnua representative players defeated the Manawatu A representative team by 16 points to 5. The game throughout was considerably hampered by the greasy nature of the ball and the heavy condition of the ground. The Horowiicnua team were, as a whole, heavier than their opponents, and. seemed quite at home under the prevailing conditions. Immediately after the kick-off the Horowhonua players carried the leather 'into their opponents’ territory, and play remained there until Manawatu relieved the situation by a force. The homo team, however, were soon again on the offensive, and Moynahan, following up from a free kick, slipped over, scoring Horowhenua’s first try. N. Wiiiiata com verted. Shortly after, L. McDonald struggled across, but failed to convert his own try, giving Horowhonua the advantage of 8 points. Manawatu livened up after this second reverse, but the superior weight of the home team proved too much for them, and they were soon on the defensive, a penalty awarded against the visitors for off-side play saw McDonald further add to the home team’s score. Things were beginning to look black indeed for Manawatu, until Dustin, Riggs and Carroll headed a fine forward rush and took play into llordwhenua’s territory. Their success, however, was short lived, and Horowhonua with a loose' forward rush, carried the ball back, Dalziell snapping up the leather and diving over Manawatu’s line. L. McDonald added the major points. After half time the visitors strongly attacked, and for a while play moved from end to end of the field. The superior weight of the homo team, however, soon again told on Manawatu, who were forced to defend their own territory for some time. So play proceeded without any. exciting event until quite' near the end of the game, when Manawatu’s forwards gathered for a last desperate effort, and from a loose rush which carried play far into Horowhenua’s ground, Riggs picked up the ball and planted it behind the home team’s lino. Swainson converted. Manawatu were again on the attack at the call of time. Mr J. >l. O’Connor refereed.

OROUA v. MANAWATU

On Saturday afternoon at Feilding the Manawatu representative B fifteen suffered defeat at the hands of an Oroua representative team by 6 points to 3. Both teams were evenly matched, although Oroua had a faster forward pack than their opponents The nature of the ground, however, did not lend itself to good play. From the ; commencement of the game Oroua assumed ’ the attack and made things uncomfortable for Manqwatu, who were compelled to force on several occasions to relieve themselves from awkward situations. This condition of affairs lasted for some time, and had it not been for the sterling defensive work of the Manawatu backs, their opponents would have been able to put up a highei score than was actually the case. Offside play on the part of Manawatu gave Oroua an opportunity and McNae ( Apiti) placed the leather between the uprights. Mana watu then took the bull into Oroua’s territory, where Fitzgerald, gaining possession, slipped across, thus evening up the scores. The kick at goal failed. Shortly aftci half-time Seeker (Oroua) secured Ihe leather, and by a smart piece of work scored,, but the resultant attempt to conv. rt was not successful. Play then assum (d a givo and take nature, but neither side secured any further points. The match High School A y.
