TOMMY ATKINS TO WEAR SCARLET.
After six years in khaki, Tommy Atkins is going back into scarlet —the scarlet uniform of his fighting ancestors for 250 years and more. Mr Winston Churchill, War Minister, has announced that the Army is to be reuniformed for peace in a modified form of its ancient dress; and the recruiting department has placarded London with alluring posters showing Guards and Highlanders in their onceagain brilliant peace uniforms—for the red coat has always held the heart of the "boy who goes for a soldier. To supply the whole Army with % 'full dress" uniforms will be a matter of three Or four years. The Guardshorse and be the first to get the new clothing. The post-war outfit will be somewhat less elaborate than that worn before 1914; and the officers will less than ever deserve the taunt of "gilded popinjays," which John Burns once flung at them. The expense ol gold braid' will be spared them as much as possible. But the scarlet that was worn on ever? battlefield from Blenheim to Majuba is to return.
