TOWN PLANNING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,---There is 11 good deal of excitement .just now over (he proposed improvements to our town, j»cc-i;i 1 l.v the .now proposal to remove the disfiguring and noisy railway our midst. This removal will mean, .do .you not think, a. very good chance for us to utilise some of our town-planning, jdea.s and to have a general clean up. One of the improvements 1 should like to see would !m, the vanishing from the middle of (lie town and f|nm amongst ( t-no.:, residences_ ,oL its people, • the . various factories, mills - , iron foundries, etc., of; a noisy or flirty description. Would it n6t ho a good action on the part of-our Council* to rejegatd all such businesses to a phico sot apart for them on (ho oiitskir!.?'of‘tho town. 1 would like to suggest that a town-planning committee be set- up to thoroughly consider the town and what can be done for it. Let ns have .something restful to the eyes round the station itself, not just a dirty utilitarian sort of place. The centre of our town after the removal of the line will lend itself to wonderful chances of beauty. Ours can be made the most: beautiful city in New Zealand. 1 was present at flic town-planning 1 conference held in Wellington some-months ago and greatly admired some'.of the: cities which have been planned on beauty-loving lines, but none could excel ours if attention 'is given to the matter,in time.—l am. etc., TOWN-L’L.V.XXL'sG.
