Bleeders of fat lambs in the North Island are universal in their praise of the Southdown ram as a means of producing early tut lambs, and their experience of the past season has taught them that the Southdown ram, mated with a good 4 or 5-year-old Romney or Romney-Lincoln ewe. lias produced excellent results. In order to secure the best returns, it is necessary to see that the ewe is sound in constitution, and carrying enough condition. Owing to the increasing price of first-class hind, suitable for fattening, it will be necessary for farmers to increase their production by paying more attention to the class ofxtwe most suitable for breeding fat lambs. The top price for a Sind Romney ram was_ 180 guineas, the high avarago of 60 guineas being maintained throughout. Prices for heifer calves ranged to 127 guineas, and for bull calves 95 guineas. The former avi raged 70 guineas*' and the latter 47 guineas.
