NEW FRUIT DISEASE.
WIDESPREAD IN WAIKATO
HAMILTON, Jan. 19. Following upon the reported appearance of a, new fruit disease, Mr L. Paynter, orchard instructor, and Mr C. Cunningham, of Weraroa, have been making investigation in the Tauranga ind Waikato districts, and find that the disease is widespread, having been liscovered at Tauranga, Hamilton, Matangi, Cambridge, Te Awamutu and lvihikihi.
While not prepared to make a definite statement as to the nature of tho disease, Mr Paynter said that the position is serious, and it would be advisable for orohardists to report to him at once if the disease is noticed. As soon is the report is received from headquarters it will be made public, together with instructions as to the best method of dealing with the pest. Mr Paynter considers that drastic action will be necessary to deal with the disease, which, if not stamped out, will wipe out the pip fruits altogether. •'The infection," he said, "is apparently spread by an insect. In nearly every case.it starts in the bud, and goes down through the wood, causing a cankerous appearance."
