COUNTRY CORRESPONDENCE.

ASHHURST, (Fno.M Oue Own Correspondent.) During last year (hero wore sixteen marriages and six deaths. Of the deaths the combined ages of the last two totalled one hundred and seventy-two years. Mrs W. Ilaynes has disposed of her property known as the Methodist Parsonage to Mr King-, a recent arrival. Mr 11. Dittinor and family, in all eight adults, left by the Tofuu for America, where they intend to settle. Mr Dittmer was a successful farmer on his Fcilding road property which he held for about 20 years. The lads, in this district are doing- thenbest to cojje with the bird pest, and at the same time earn a little pocket money. So far they have handed in about 3000 eggs, which' should be the means of assisting our fruit and grain growers. The Domain is booked for the Palmerston North Combined Methodists, on the 22m1, ami for the Palmerston North Church of Kngland on February 14th. SHANNON. BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At the meeting of the Borough Council the following were present:— llis Worship the Mavor, Councillors Spencer, •Kelly, Furgh'er! Hxllier, Gardner, Scott, Richardson, .McMillan. It was decided that Wednesday si.oud bo jthe statutory half-holiday ! for this year. The night sanitary contractor [tendered his resignation as from 16th insi. , Applications are to be called for the position. An application for permission to build was referred back to applicant for fuller plans and specifications. Mr C. Clifford was appointed Inspector of Nuisances with power to prosecute and dog tax collector. The time for paying rates less 10 per cent. penally was extended to 23th January. Two residents are to be prosecuted for breaches of the building by-laws. A poll of ratepayers is to be taken at r.n early date to raise a loan'of £2500 for Uic electric lighting of the Borough in accordance with the report of the Borough Engineer, Mr R. Edwards.

Several small repairs are to be done at the foreman's cottage. Rubbish baskets are to be placed in from ol Post Office and local picture theatre. The police are endeavouring :<• trace the person who wilfully broke into the pavilion on the recreation grounds and damaged the place to the extent of 30s.

The Soldiers' Club is now readv for the opening ceremony, which will take place within a few davs.

The ftrst cup match in the Iloiowhenua Cricket Association took place in Levin t-n Saturday. The Shannon team easily defeated the Levin team bv 145 runs to 67. Berquist 32, Merwood 28, Newth 20. and Ffemin'gson 20, were the most prominent batsmen, while Randall six wickets and Nowtli and llemingson two each were the Shannon bowlers. The Rev. Harris 30, was the only Levin batsman to reach double figures.'

A representative match, Manav/atn versus Iforowhenua, is to lie plaved in Palmerston North on the 22nd insi. The following will represent Iforowhenua: Randall. Berquist, liemimngsnn, Doidge, Memvood.
