PROPOSED EXCHANGE.
RESERVE WANTED FOR TERRACE
END.
A clause in the recommendations of the ; Reserves Committee to the Borough Council at its meeting last night caused some uisoussion. It was as follows:—"That the, Council be recommended to offer the Education Depaitment by way of exchange for tho educational reserve at the corner of Terrace and Foatherston streets four acres of land adjoining the Girls' High School, and fronting Fitzherbert street; or, as an alternative, four acres of land at tho comer of Te Awe Awe and Fitzherbert streets, on | an equal value basis." Cr. Crabb (chairman of tho Reserves Committee), referring to tho proposed exchange, said that the land proposed to be exchanged for the Borough land was of tho fame acreage. , Tho Mayor said that he did not know if tho Council would bo justified in making tho exchange. Ten years hence peoplo might come along and say they had been most unwise if they parted with the frontage in Fiuherbort street. Cr. L. R. Bryant said that another body was after tho section in question, and if the Council did not take it now it might not got tho chance lator. Tho Mayor stated that six chains of their frontage had gone already, and ho did not liko losing another four chains. Cr. Crabb said that they could not get anything unless thev gave a quid pro quo. If they got the section at tho tram stop at Terrace End they must give something for it. Tho education authorities wanted tho ground in Fitzherbert street for a hostel. Cr. Hodgens wanted to know if there was a chance of buying the reserve. The Mavur: There is no chance; we tried that. There is the argument that it would bo fatal to make any suggestion about selling education reserves. If the Council considered the question of obtaining _ Mr O'Reilly's section at Terrace End provision would bo made for a school playing area and also a recreation ground. They wanted a recreation ground at Terrace End, and they would be doing a great kindnoss to tho people at that end of the town if they could get a ground at all. If they could buy Mr O'Reilly's land they would have a place they could beautify. Cr. Crabb said that it was much more important to got the reserve at Terrace End than to keep tho few chains of frontage in Fitzherbert street. . Cr. Bryant: 1 think so too. It a not as if we were selling it to a private person. It would bo for tho assistance of education tn tho district. They want it for a hostel; they have not tho land now. Tho Mayor: I would sooner give them tho fpur acres in To Awe Awe street. Cr. Crabb said he was thinking oi: the matter in connection with the Girls High School. It was also most desirable that they should get a reservo at Terrace End, and this was their ono opportunity. Cr. Bryant: We havo reserves in tho other three quarters of tho town. t Cr. Hodgens said that the piece of land proposed to bo obtained could not bo considered central for Terrace End. Cr. Crabb said they wore not getting the land only for tho prosent, but were providing for the extension of tho town. Cr. Lancaster: Havo wo any price tor Mr O'Reillv's land? Cr. Crabb. £6OOO for 10 acres., Ultimately the recommendation of the committee was agreed to.
