ALLEGED JEWELLERY THEFT.

J At tho Polico Court this morning, bofore Most is C. E. Waldegravo and M. A. Eliott, J\s.P., Leslie Ellis, alias Leonard Willis, vvus charged with breaking and entering oho dwelling house of Joseph Stone, ire Bourka stroot, and stealing therefrom ono rolled gold muff chain with two gold lockets and greenstone pendant attached, a lady's silvor opon-faced watch, and a gold" broouh, valued at £lO, tho property of Mary Ann Stone. DetectiveSergeant Qu.V'ko appeared for the polico and Mr H. It., Cotoper for tho accused. Mary Ann Stflmo, who rosides at 42 Bourke street, deposed that on Monday, October 6, she lerfti her house about 11 a.m., leaving tho dooqs and windows locked with th« exception of tho bathroom window. When she returned homo with her husband about 11 p.m. she found a screwdriver on hor beUroom table, which had been taken fromi hor washhouso. Lator sho found certain articles of jewellery wero missing, and sho identified the muff-chain produced as hor property. Somo money in small change was also missing. Joseph Sitono, husband of tho previous witness, ga-vo cctrroborativo evidence. Charles Fonton, barman at tho Cafe de Paris Hotel, ■ in tJhc courso of his evidence, stated that somo days ago he saw the muff-chain in tho possession of a certain man, but ho could not say if tho accused was the persctn. Certain articles of jewellery had been offered for sale in the hotel bur, but he could not recollect tho date nor who was present at the timo. Frederick W. Klein, restaurant-koopor, of Main street, deposed that on Tuesday, 7th inst., accusctd offorod to sell him tho chain produced 'for ss, saying ho wanted to get away irt tho morning. Witness asked accused If the chain was genuine, and ho said thplt it was. Witness then gave him 5s for the chain, which lator ho handed to tho polico when he found out that it had been stolon. _ ; Detective-Sergeant Quirke, giving ovid- I enco, stated that on the 10th inst. ho received tho jewellery produced from tho last witness. On the samo date witness and Constable Oulloty nrrested ncciisod, who when ho was; charged said: "I don t know anything about it; I am safe for I once in my life." ' Accused reserved his defence, and was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court at Palmerston, bail I being fixed at two sureties of £SO each.
