THE BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY.
Statements having been made reflecting ou a certain section of the Borough Council and the consulting engineer as-ao their actions in connection with the silting up of the Tirilea dam, it may help to arrive at the true facts of the case it we publish a report presented to the Council by the borough engineer on the ISlli August, and of which the visit of the councillors to the waterworks ou Saturday was the outcome. The report is a.- follows : —"I am given to understand that a report has been made, to the effect that the silt liehind the old darn (now submerged) lias accumulated to such an extent that it is overflowing and l>eing deposited behind the main dam. After consultation with Mr Jickell, I beg to state that we are of opinion that if such a state of affairs exist the silt should be removed at the earliest opportunity, but the present (low of the stream and the prospect of further heavy rain does not render it expedient to do anything meantime. We recommend that in about four .veeks’ time, should the weather conditions he. suitable, that the water level in the dam be lowensl, and an examination be made ;n company with the members of the Council, when a decision can be arrived at on the spot-. It is satisfactory to note that the dam which was emptied on Friday afternoon hits filled much quicker than was expected. Water was turned on at 5 p m. ou hriclay and by last evening it was running down the overflow outlet.
