BISHOP VERDON DEAD.
A Wellington Press Association message states that Bishop Verdon, of! Dunedin, died hist night from heart failure, following bronchitis. Tin* deceased prelate, tho RagW R ( ' v - Miehael Verdon, I).I)., was born at Liverpool in 1838, and educated at St. Vincent's College, Castlebrook, Dublin, and at the Irish College, Rome. Ordained as a priest in 1861, ho became o Professor at tho Holy Cross College, Dublin, and succeeded 'Canon Power as President;, also becoming a Canon of the Dublin Cathedral Chapter m 1876. Called thence to assist in the government oi the Irish College at Rome, where he held the position of Vice-Rector, lie was appointed Hector of St. Patrick's Collogo, Manly, Now South Wales, in 1888. Hi 1895 ho returned to Rome as the representative of the Australian Bishops at the- Vatican. He was appointed Bishop of Dunedin and consecrated in that city by Cardinal Moran on May 3, 1890.
