ALDERMAN PULLS AH. OTHER'S NOSE.
AUSTRALIAN WAP LOAN CAUSES FIGHT. IIPOKEN HILL, Aug. LM. A light, occurred at. a meeting of the Broken Hill City Council on Thursday night during the, discussion, of a letter from the New South Wales War Doan committee asking for support for tin; loan. When a motion to this effect, was proposed, Alderman Harnett, who is also secretary of the A.M.A., moved an amendment that the workers, who had contributed to patriotic funds Iroin the outset, could not. afford to find any more, in view of the coal lockout, and the increased cost of living. It was, ho said, time the. “soolcrs-pn,” or “longdistance fighters,” gave a bit. Ho described some of the other aldermen as “soolcrs-on.” Words followed between Aldenmm Wicks and Alderman Barnttt, and Alderman Wicks threatened to pull the other’s nose. Alderman Barnett: Trv it, old man!
Alderman Wicks: Come on, then. You’ll apologise, or I’ll pull your nose! The two members adjourned to the Mayor’s parlor, the meeting being adjourned meanwhile, and Alderman Wicks pulled Alderman Barnett's nose, A scuffle followed, and the two aldermen, when they were separated, returned with the scars of battle on them. Alderman Barnett’s nose wore a ruddy hue, and Alderman Wicks was bleeding from a scratch on the. noso. When the meeting was resumed Alderman Barnett’s amendment was carried. At the conclusion of the meeting Alderman Barnett said to Alderman Wicks: “The best thing wc can do is to have a good go!” Alderman Wicks: I don’t want to hurl you, but if you fool that way, come on!’’ Other aldermen interfered and further trouble was prevented.
