KAIRANGA COUNTY COUNCIL.
MEMBERS’ MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Kairanga County Council was held'to-day, tin* members present being ( Vs. .1. Linklater (chairman); W. \V. Wiisher, D. Thomas, D. Golds. 1). Prouse, G. Craw, M. Moody, ami P J Small. 'COLLEGE STREET FOOTPATH. The (.'ha inn tut reported that another coufetenee had been held regarding the* extension of th/i footpath in College street, the estimated cost of which (including tarring) was i-1586. It had been decided to do the work provided the Hospital Board found £IOO. the Racing Club £125, and tho ratepayers £l6O, the County Council to had the balance of £2OO. The Racing ( htb had definitely promised to provide £125, and the ratepayers had already subscribed £l6O. . ’ tin the motion of ( , , (' Hi- and Small,'it ■was decided (hat the work be proceed'-d with w hen the contributions are paid in to the Council. WANDERING STOCK. The engineer reported that since lasi meeting a total of 167 head of stock had been taken on the roads. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The rep,.rt of the engineer (Mr A. 11. M Wright) wits as follow.-,: —_ Mangaottc Riding.—A considerable amount) of repair and maintenance has been carried out in litis titling during the month. Metalling: An average ol nearly six metal teams have been employed, a total of about 706 cubic yards of metal being carted out- for repairs. Of this amount 190 cubic yards was used on Railway road, and small amounts on other roads. Grading; Barts of the formation of Te Mai a I road -are now being widened with jrradcr, winch work when completed should I (feel a considerable improvement. '1 he tint ha- also been trimmed back with gruder on C.'amcrou’.s, Milson’s, and New bitty lines. Maintenance: Resides the above, ft good deal of work has been done in forming and cleaning witterl.able ami drain Culverts: Two new cement pipe culvert• have been put in at junction of Roberts’ line and Kairanga-Bunnythorpe roads, to allow of widening of formation tit i hui: point. A small culvert has also cccn been put in to drain water hole on side of road near Bnnnytlior-pe. Stables: Feed bin-; have been constructed at Roberts hut! st.titles, anil some posts split, from old bridge timber for fencing in a further lemrili of unused road tor use oi county leant. New feed boxes have also beet! made for Janies’ line stables, Taomn Riding.—Metalling : Some patching has been carried out, principally on Eoxot-n line and Longlnirn-Rongotoa. roads. Grading: Ihe graders have been employed on several of the roads in this rilling, the largest- amount of work living done on No. 1 line, where part- of bank between metal and drain lias been removed to widen formation. A long length of watertable has also been cut. (Adverts: 105 foet ol I lie ie-w (train tit rhe back of Longburn station litis been piped, 9 inch cement pipes being list'd. A new cement pipe culvert, ha:; also been put in on Longburn Rongotea road and length of waterlnblo cut to same. Bridges: Handrails of bridge over Mangaoue stream, Fox ton line, recently repaired, have boon painted white. Rnngitikoi line.—Metalling; About 1/ chains of this road has been remctnllcd, 2CO cubic yards of crushed stone being used in the work. Grading: The grader has been employed for part of (lie month in trimming- Hindis and widening formation to allow of better , drainage. Besides the above work a good deal of patching has been carried out. Culverts: Pipes have been ordered for two new culverts required. This Council is the controlling body for this bridge, and contributes 5G per cent of cost of work. Fitzbci-bcrr Riding.—Scott s road : (mod progress is being made by coni factors employed on this road, about 11 chains o) heavy sideling formation being completed during the month. Metalling: Jho Council teams have been employed in carting out metal for repairs to the Main ant/ livitea roads, and Mdnck s line. . Maintenance: The large Hips on Pahiatua road has entailed an expenditure ol about £lb to keep road open for traffic during the month, Culverts: A new 18-inch pipe culvert was put in on Tiritea road, the original culvert being of too small capacity to take flood water. An 18-inch pipe culvert has been put In on Alain road near foot of Tiritea hill for the same reason, new and deeper watoviablo.s being cut At the large tilling known as Devil s F - how on Main road a new 18-incli pipe culvert was put in. as the original culvert is very liable to become blocked, m which case the new culvert which is at a higher level would prevent lilting being earned away, ~ii Manawatn Gorge,—The road was blocked owing to slips on 7th instant, but vas opened for tradio again that night. \ hj ( ‘ turning place for cars at, entrance to the Gorge has been completed. Brumes: Lie renewal of handrails on several of the small bridges is now being earned out. and when completed they will be painted white. By-laws.—Overhanging trees, gorso, etc., on roads : A number of notices have been sent out to owners instructing them to cut back trees, or grub and remove gorso, etc., from road reserve fronting their properties. One summons was issued for noncompliance within specified lime, but the owner immediately carrying out. the work, the case was withdrawn. Trafiic by-laws: For shifting a house down Long Melford road, and thereby practically closing the road for all trafiic for two days and nights, a contractor was prosecuted. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE, From B. J. Buhner, Bunnythorpe, staling that lie considered 10s per year was quite sufficient rent to pay for a small piece of null,ml road leased by him from the (fouiuil. — It was agreed to accept the rental olfored. From .1, 11. Fowler, Bunnythorpe, applying for permission tt> e lasb-n a flood-gate on the lower side of the Mangaone bridge on tile Buniiythorpe-Kairaiiga road.- —Left to the, engineer to attend to. From A. A. Hawker, Bunnylhorpe, asking permission to erect a gate across tingrass road between Mr •!, Faulkner’s property and \V. Taurangapito’s property, as lie is now leasing Mr Faulkner’s farm.-- Lett to Cr. Thomas, with power to act. From W. Roddy, manager for Mrs B. 11. llilev’s property at Linton, drawing attention to the dangerous state of the Kalinierawa road, at a washout just above Mr F. Shaw’s house. - Tin* piaticr was lefl to the engineer and the members of the riding to deal with. From I’ahiatua County Council, notifying that the deputation regarding the Manawatn Gorge and bridges would wail on the Minister of Public Works at Wellington on the 18th iasl,— I The matter was referred to the Council’s delegates previously appointed. From A. Richards, drawing attention to the state of Setter’s Line from the junction of Richardson's line towards the Mangaone, stating that it was almost impassable for vehicular trafiic. It was pointed out that this portion of the road was only used by one property owner, who already had access to Ids property from another direction. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman and Cr, Wilsher with power to act. \
