SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Wednesday night. Present—Tlie Mayor, Crs. Spencer, Gardner, Fargher. Hook, Gunning, Moynihan and Richardson. CORRESPONDENCE. Letter from Shannon Red Cross Sowing Guild, asking for use of Institute every Tuesday afternoon, also cupboard to keep the large trunks and sewing machineDecided that request be, acceded to. Letter from Shannon Patriotic Society, requesting a representative to attend a meeting at an early date to discuss the question of holding a gymkhana.—Mayor— Cr. Fargher: That Or. Spencer represent the Council. —Carried. Letter from T, F. Martin, solicitor to the M.A.N.Z., with opinion as follows:—"If is competent to the Valuer-General it' he thinks lit to appoint as valuer of the. Borough any valuer whom he may employ for that purpose, and therefore any valuer nominated to him by the Council. The Valuer-General can amend his Government roll in consequence of the addition or removal of improvements, and can authorise. the local body to similarly correct its roll supplied by him. bin the rate,- must be struck on the values as appearing in the local body's roll at the 31si March prior to striking the rates." Fargher—Spencer': Thai the mutter ol a revaluation of the Borough of Shannon be referred to u committee consisting ol iho Mayor. Crs. Spencer, Gunning and Fargher! and report at next meeting ol the Council.—Carried. Letter from G. Watson, ranger, enclosing cheque £\ 3s. —Moynilwui—Gardner : That the ranger be paid 12s Oil a week from September 16, 1917, until other arrangements can bo made. —Carried. GENERAL. It was decided to accept Adam Burges's price for dray. £3l 7s, the work to be put in hand immediately. The Mayor informed the Council thai he had received a letter from Mr -McMillan, offering to give an entertainment in aid of the French Repatriation Fund, and he (the Mayor) had handed the matter over to the Red Cross Society.
Cr. Gunning's notice of motion re opening the roads between the hours of sunrise and sunset on payment of an annual fee of .50s for each animal was ruled out. of oiilcr by the Mayor, as being in conflict with the law of Now Zealand. Moyhihan—Hook : That Mr Gunning's notice of motion as ruled out of order by tlio Mayor be submitted to the counsel for tiib M.A.N.Z. for opinion. Notico of motion by Cr. Hook: Thai Hie kcrbing and channelling of Ballanee street from the picture Hall to Mr Eargher's shop in ITiumier terrace bo commenced immediately, and othei portions ol the principal streets be also kerbed and channelled if sufficient funds are aviiilable. Spencer—Moynihan: That, a vote of thanks he accorded Mr R- : . Tippler for storing ambulance free of charge to date, and his offer to store same in future a! .v, per month be accepted.—Carried. Spencer Hook: That the Maya- inspect polo kindly offered by Cr. Moyuilntn and sec that ambulance- is in proper working order.—-Carried. Gunning—Richardson: Thai the use of Ih.- ambulance be available to Ihe public for use at any time—Carried. Gunning— Richardson: that Cl'3. Hook and Gardner be empowered to purchase suitable horse. Accounts were passed for payment as follows:-New Zealand Railways, JUI 13s 8d; J. H. Keller, £ll 17s Gd; Harry Bute, £l2 13.5. Qn the motion ol Cr. Gardner, seconded by the Mayor, il was resolved that a letter b'o written' to Cr-. Hook and Carter, ex pressing the (.'ouueil's -empathy will) them in having each a son severely wounded nt the front in the late engagement.
