DEFENCE QUESTIONS.

In reply to a question addressed to him in the Mouse to-day, Sir James Allen stated that he had decided that the next of kin could not be allowed alongside departing transports. Many parcels bad been handed to tho soldiers from tho wharf on a recent occasion, and, in these days of criminal attempts to destroy ships, the Government could not take"any risks. Complaint had been made i (Sir James Allen stated in replying to another question) that had food had boon supplied to troops on a transport recently. He had learned that some bad butter bad been sent aboard by a WelliiiGjton contractor, but the Crown Law Officers informed him that there was no ground for legal proceedings. He did not intend to let the matter rest there.
