POPULAR JOCKEY ENTERTAINED.
Driver Arthur Oliver, who loaves for the front with the 26th Reinforcements, was entertained by a number aof friends on Sabir day evening at a pleasant little gathering, over which Mr 11. 11. Cooper presided. During the evening the guest was presented with an address, an automatic pistol, a smokers out (it, and a safety razor from his friends and admirers. In proposing the toast of the evening, Mr Cooper congratulated Driver Oliver in going to light for lib King and country, and said they all took oil their hats to a soldier. Their guest was noted for his dashing riding, and lift thought that if “Arthur’’ came to grips witii tlu Doolie- he would show the same dash, and the Boohe would know all about it. Oliver’s spirit in the saddle was typical ot the British army, that devil-may-care spirit that took punishment without a murmur, and yet iu victory or success was the embodiment of modesty and good fellowship. As a rider, their guest had boon before the public for a long - time, and during Ins lengthy career had never been suspected of doing anything - unbecoming a thorough sportsman. This was a record he could in proud of, and he had always "ridden with the confidence of his employer, and bettoi than that no one wished more. He. had ridden to win, and the speaker felt sure iu would do the same in the sterner race it. which he would soon l»s taking part. All ('coper wished Driver Oliver every good luck, and hoped if would not ho long befon he was back again. In response. Drive) Oliver thanked his friends for their kind ness. He would do Ids best when he got to the front. The .presents he had received would remind him of his Palmerston friends. Air tied. Price, in proposing the health ol the boys at. the front, paid a warm tribute to the guest of the, evening. A number of other toasts were honoured be fore the gathering was brought to a close.
