DEATH OF A PIONEER.
MBS EDWIN BANNISTER. The dentlt is reported oi Mrs K. Banister, who passetl away at her residt :i(e, oil Ferguson street, this morning at ■ age of 87 years. Tho deceased lady the wife ol the late Mr Edwin Bannister. who resided at Johnsonville for o, r ■.';»'' years and was a passenger in the good ship "'Aral)'' which arrived at Poll Nicholson Harbour (now Wellington; on October 14th, 1841. tlm ship bringine over seven hundred immigrant*. auiui.L! them being Mr and Mrs Poier Tutciicn and a family of seven children, (hi- iui tor inohuling Mrs Bannister. Ai 'l"' lime of tin* ship's arrival there wore no house.-; to be routed, so the families had to stay on board the vessel while the lathers and sons built wharves ami wheels to enable them to land and live in for a time. Tho first home oi ile Tutehen family was situated al Thornuon on a portion of the laud which inow occupied by the Thimidon brewery. Many oi the passengers built little homes fronting the seashore a! ■>n\ Lambton Quay. The Tutehen family, then took tip land at Happy \'all?y, and continued farming in that district lor many year-. Their ito.vt move was to take up farming in Wellington, and they purchased a large area ai Hawthorn Hill. Brougham btnvt, where the family resided up to the time of the death of their parents. The estate was cat up. arid is now known in parts as Tutebon A von no and Tuiehen .-si-oet. The late Mrs Bannister was living on her farm at Newbury for many years, and latterly at Ferguson street. Palmerston North. She was widely known a.nd much respected throughout the North Island for her benevolent disposition to all deserving charities. She leaves three sons and foui daughters to mount her loss. They are Airs Isaac Lovelock, of Newbury. Mrs .John Henworth, of Palmerston North. Mrs W. "Rowlands, Palmerston North. Mr .1. Rowlands, Palmerston North, "Miss .1. Bannister. Mr-Root. E. Bannister (who was well known as managing director and principal proprietor of the New Zealand Times up to a few vears ago, when ho retired), Mr Charles W. Raniiister, chief chemist Bingora Sugar Plantation. Queensland, and Mr Henry Bannister, farmer. Palmerston North. l There are 47 grand-children. Mr \Y. 1. Lovelock, of Ka re re, being the oldest, and 42 great grand-children, Tho only other surviving: one ol the Tutehen family is a sister of the. late Mrs Bannister. Mrs John Water-, of Pipitea. street. Wellington. The funeral will take place at .Johnsonville tomorrow, Wednesday, at 2 o'clock,
