MANAWATU HUNT.
OPENING OF THE SEASON. The war has been responsible for many 'changes in settled arrangements, and it was .-•!•<> due to this fact that tlie Manawatu Hunt opened itc season on Saturday, this i function being held earlier than usual owing In a number of member's going into cam)) this week. At the kind invitation of Mr \ Ernest Short, of Parorangi, the meet took | place on his fine property, and when the , hour of commencement arrived one ol the i largest hunting gatherings ever seen in this ; district had assembled, the visitor; including ! representatives from all the surrounding I localities. The ihy was line and the coun- ! try in splendid order for the sport. Mr Snort had prepared two fine runs, the first from (hf homestead towards flic river, and along lilt' bank to Almadule. and the second from the latter place alongside the roads hack to the homestead. There was an exceptionally iarge nnmb'.T of sp<'< tator.-. between twenty and thirty motor ear loads ol keenh interested friends of the sport getting a splendid view of both runs. '1 hough it was the fust run of the season, Huntsman Sexton had the hounds in good heart, and they ran well throughout. Mr T. Taylor (Deputy-Master.) was in charge of the field; Mr E K. Short acted as lion, whip Hi" first drag was laid by Mr Ernest Short,) and tho second by Mr E. Burrell. At the conclusion of the hunt well over a hundred visitors wore entertained at a. ftcrnoon tea by Mr and Mrs Short, and before dispersing the Dcputv-Master proposed a hearty vote of thanks on behalf of tho guests, not only for tho sumptuous manner in which they had been entertained. but for splendid hunt, arranged and the great trouble their host had taken in preparing tho fences. Three hearty cheers were given lor Mr and Airs Short and n similar compliment was, paid Huntsman Sexton. In acknowloclging the vote of thank.-.. Mr Short said it was a tribute to the quality of the horses, notwithstanding it was ihe hist run ol the season, that all the fences througnout both run's were, still standing.
