THE LION.
The Liorv and Princess Royal were completed in 1912-13, the only other ships of their class being the Queen Mary. These liattle cruisers displace 27,000 tons, are 660 feet in length and 88j feet broad. They have turbines of about 70,000 h.p., which enable them to steam at 28 kriots, though this speed has been greatly exceeded in service. The main armament consists of. ten 13.5 in. guns, discharging a projectile of 14001b. weight, at the rate of two rounds per minute. These weapons are mounted in four double turrets on the centre-line, and can thus be fired on either broadside. Sixteen 4in. quick-firers are carried for repelling torpedo attack. There are also two submerged torpedo tubes. The main armour belt is about 9in. thick, with lOin. plating on the turrets. The fidl fuel capacity is 3000 tons, and the complement numbers 980 officers and men. These ships averaged £2,085,000 to build and complete.
