THE LURE OF GOLD.
"ALL-BLACKS" TEMPTED. LEAGUERS AFTER RUGBY UNION CHAMPIONS. (Ptt PIMI AlincUTIOK.l AUCKLAND, July 24. A cablegram received from Sydney last week stated that overturse had been, made to the "All-Blacks," and that three were to go over to the new (League) code. A private letter received from a member of the "AIl-Blaoks" team now touring Australia refers at length to the overtures made by the League executive. Negotiations were certainly in progress, and, to use the writer's own words, "the League are desperate.''
"It ia the beginning of the end," he writes; "for there is a decided revulsion of feeling 1 in Sydney towards Union Rugby. An offer of £3OOO was made to the 'ALIBlacks' if they would play an Australian League team. Tho League havo plenty of money at present, and stop at nothing to get players. They haven't six deoent men of their own rearing." The writer gives it as his opinion that it would take more than £3OOO to get "the boys," who, he hoped, would remain staunch. He was doing his best to keep them amateurs, but, as he ooneludes, £2OO in a man's palm was a "devil of a temptation."
