LADIES' HOCKEY.

ENGLAND DEFEATS AUSTRALIA. (Bi luohbo nusitfi-Cormm.) (FB fhm AMoounoa.) SYDNEY, July 24. The English ladies' hockey teem defeated Australia by 11 to 3. A FINE TEAM. The English ladies' team, which plays Manawatu in Palmerston on Wednesday week, has an. unbroken record of sue* ceases in Australia. New South Wales was defeated by 12 goals to 3. The Sydney Sun, reporting this match, said:— When the match between England and New South Wales was in progress, there must have been about 2000 spectators, and the chorus of approval, of the play witnessed! was unanimous. It was a fine game, full of incident, bright play, and individual sparkle, although the English team won it handsomely. The English girls were heavier and knew more of the game than the New Bouth Wales girls, and they teamed better. Unselfish play and fearlessness characterised both sides, so that their contest was pleasant to watch, and the umpires had an easy task. It was said by one of the chaperones of the English team that her girls were not in condition yet; but if they get into any better condition there will not be a team in Australia to get within coo-ee of.them. Yesterday's team for New South Wales was a good one, and some of the girls In, it were fleeter-footed than their over-sea friends, but their lack of weight and comparative slowness in turning at times made them inferior to the visitors. Possibly, too, the New South Wales girls may have been handicapped by the skirts they wore The English players, clad in white blouses with full red skirts, moved freely and gracefully. The local team will practice at the Showground as usual on Monday snd Tuesday morning.
