; - HOW A FRENCH WRITER WAS CAUGHT. BRILLIANT CROSS-EXAMINATION IN OAILLAUX TRIAL. (Bi JEuomo Tjuaian~oom»n.) ■'> (Pm Puis Assocunos.) PARIS, Jjily 24. The feature of the Caillaux trial is the outstanding genius of M. Labori, whose skill in conducting the defence equals that which he displayed in the Dreyfus trial. Paul Bourget, the poet ana novelist, defended his dead friend Calmette'* conduct in revealing the skeleton in Caillaux's cupboard. M. Labori then quoted Bourget's novel, "Demon du Midi," wherein'the characters condemn the publication of the heroine's love letters. M. Labori impressed on the Court that M. Bourget was striving to eondone what his novel represented as a despicable act. '/- M. Calmette'* brother-in-law, who is chairman of the Figaro Company, denied piece-meal all Caillaux's charges that German financiers dominated the Figaro during the Moroccan crisis. M. Caillaux indicated that he wished to hear witness better. M. Chenu (Calmette's counsel) remarked: "It all becomes M. Caillaux to endeavour to defile tho grave his wife has made."' M. Caillaux jumped to his feet and asked M. Chenu if he would take the responsibility of his words. The lawyer replied: "I take the entire retoonsibility. You cannot menace me here. You doubtless do not know the tamper of the man you address." \ .. [An interesting note on Iff." Labori and the Caillaux trial will be found in Frank Morton's "Current Topics" on page 3.1
