THE CARNIVAL.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Last evening a meeting of the Carnival Committee was held, presided over by the Mayor. A sub-committce reported on a successful canvaei of the Square, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded those business people who donated trophies for the various competitions. Mr Clausen's trophy was allocated to the most graceful lady skater at the competition in the Opera House, and the Gab Company's trophy to the best gentleman skater, also at the Opera House competition. A number of entries were received for .the Highland dancing, waltzing, musical monologues, and tug-of-war competitions, and it is anticipated that all contests will be well supSorted. Entries close on Thursday next, uly 2. Arrangements for doorkeepers, etc., at the carnival were left in the hands of the secretary. The result of the ballot will be announced twice next week and every night of Carnival week. CORONATION OF QUEEN. The Mayor presented to the meeting full particulars of this important, function. The coronation will take place immediately after the interval on Saturday night (last night of carnival), and will open with a fanfare by four trumpeters, followed by a proclamation by a herald. The Queen will then he crowned and she will make a short speech from the throne, and bestow the order of knighthood on a local citizen. The stage will be specially dressed to represent a court scene, and the numerous people taking part will be in court dress. The services of an electrician have been engaged to mako a fitting display with coloured lights, and the whole ceremony will make a suitable dose to the carnival.
A dance will be held in the Longburn Hall on Monday evenir.g, and the proceeds will gd to the fund for purchasing votes for Miss Taylor. If enthusiasm counts for much in the Carnival Queen election, then Miss Harris should occupy a very good position on the closing of the ballot. Another very successful social was given by the staff of Messrs C. M. Ross and Co. to Mi« Harris last evening in the Empire Hall. There was a very good attendance and the function was a financial success, due to the efforts of a hard-working committee. For the dance Mrs Poynton and Mr J. Blake provided the music, while Mr J. Manning officiated as M.C. During the evening Mise Harris sang "I Hear You Calling Me.'' A very dainty supper was provided. The piano was kindly lent by Messrs G. H. Bennett and Co.
A novel entertainment for Mise Harris's candidature will be held on Wednesday afternoon next, when a tango afternoon tee, will be given at the Alexandra tea rooms. This will commence at 3 o'clock and will conclude at 5 o'clock. Some of the latest tea gowns, direct from Paris, will be shown. The tango will be danced by Madame Oonnop. Admission has been fixed at Is 6d, including afternoon tea. Musical items will also bo given. In the evening a combined social of the various soft-goods establishments will be
held. Rongotea residents gave a social and tlance to Miss Ellen Millar, the sports' candidate, last evening, when there was a packed hall. A good financial result was tho outcome of the social. Later in the evening Miss Millar and party were motored to Bunnythorpe, where the Tennis Club gave her a complimentary locial There was also a good attendance there, and on entering the hall Miss Millar was greeted with cheers. Pleasant evenings were spent in both cases. At Rongotea items were contributed by Messrs E. Cr.ldow, P. Torstonsen, Johnston, W. Young and W. Coles, Misses Smith and Ellen Millar. Music was supplied by Mr W. Donaldson. The ladies of Rongotea deserve great praise for their excellent entertainment. At the Friendly Societies' euchre tourney last evening a collection wae taken up for the Societies' nominee for the Carnival Queenship, Miss Taylor, a satisfactory sum being realised. Mr J. H. Watt has donated a pair of skates for the most original costume at the skating carnival, either lady or gentleman. Anyone wishing to reserve seats may do so for a charge of 6d extra by applying to Mr J. H. Watt. "Tho Living Bridge" rehearsal will be held to-morrow afternoon at. the Opera House. Longburn supporter# of Miss Mailman are giving a social and dance in her favour at Longburn Hall next Wednesday. The Band will parade to-mcrrow night and play selections in lront of the Working Men's Club in honour of Miss E. Mailman. An enjoyable dance wa« giren by the Working Men's Club to their candidate, Miss Mailman, in the Foresters' Hall last evening. A good attendance produced a healthy financial resull. . To-night Miss Taylor, the Friendly Societies' nominee, is being accorded a dance in th(j Orient Hall, Church street. Supporters are notified of this.
