GOVERNMENT DEFEAT IN SOUTH AFRICA.

INCOME TAX BILL. (Bi Elictbio Teuobaph—Coptbioht.) (Pia Pb«m Association) CAPE TOWN, June 12. Hie Government was defeated on amendment to bring the Premier diamond mine (in which the State has an interest) under the income tax law. The Government will not resign, considering the sacrifice of tho session's labours detrimental to the country's interests. Mr Botha, in the Assembly, said though defeated on a question of detail the Government attached importance thereto and unless it received fuller support in future it would not be justified in remaining in office. Speaking to the motion which led to the crisis, Mr Smith contended that the State's 60 per cent, share in the Premier mine was equivalent to a 15 per cent, profit tax. Parliament was not free to impose further taxation. The Labourites, Hertzgoites and ten Ministerialists voted with the majority.
