Manawatu fielded eleven men, the remainder of the team replacing I fielders at intervals. Cody and Collins commenced the innings for the visitors, Collins facing Greer. Greer's second ball was sent to the leg boundary, and off the fourth a single was scored. Ongley bowled at the lower end, with the wind, five singles coming off his over. Singles came freely off Greer until his sixth ball of his second over, when ho clean bowled Cody with a splendid length ball, amidst much applause. 13 —I—3.1 —3. Ongley's next over was a maiden, the first of the day. Dr. Dolling filled the breach, and scored a* couple of singles, off Greer. Twenty appeared as the result of a boundary to leg, off Greer, from Collins, after twenty minutes' play. Dolling had a life at this stage through stepping up to and missing Ongley, Cornish behind the 6tumps failing to take the ball clean. Collins was playing freely, and giving a very pretty exhibition. McKenzie also was treating the spectators to nice free cricket, and, though mostly singles, the runs were frequent. A pretty leg boundary by McKenzie from Greer brought the total to 70. McLean now replaced Greer with Eliott, and Collins sent his first ball for 3 to leg, McKenzie placing the fifth to the boundary. Nine runs were scored off the over. No matter how the field were placed, the batsmen got the ball through. Runs between the wicket were frequent, and evoked applause. TWO FOR 92. When the luncheon adjournment was taken the score, was 2 wickets for 92runs. At 2.30, after resuming, the score w r as 4 for 145.
