I lind that 2\ chains in length require to l« re-kerlvci (tiie old wooden ke r b being ]>erisiied). re-formed, and tarred, and i esti mate the cost at £ls. Tins work is neces sary. as the footway in question is no; a credit to the town. Re the proposed footways in Willis street, the sections on this street are well occupied, there being- nin< dwellings on one side, and the other side is?occupied by dwellings and business pre nuses. Ihe total length is 22 chains, or ii chains for each side, and the estimated cost is £llO, Tiie Council's workmen have completed the tarring of the footway it Summorhays stiver. Hast- street, and Church street East, and that i'l Terrace street will 1 >' 1 completed to-day; also the tarring of tii© footway in Tramway street is in pro gress. The invert in the Foxton line ditch is compiled to within 8.5 chains of tht end, and if ihe weather continues to lie tine this work can be completed in about two weeks from now. In connection with this matter the money available at present is expended, but there is a surplus from other loans unexpended which will about complete the invert to the Borough boundary. and as the Act provides for the appropriation of such surplus, I would suggest that it. be used for the finishing, of this necessaiy work. I have received quotations (herewith presented) for painting the band roamda (recently repaired) at the Esplanade, and would recommend that the lowest Lie aceepti d. I have examined the filters at Tiritea and find that they are working satisfactorily, both as to pressure and cleanliness of the water. They ar" now being washed daily at 5 a.m.. witli the result that the pressure does not vary more than from 211xs to 31bs per square inch Lictweon the inlets and the outlets. Re drain and water service on land which Mr B. Just leases from the Borough. Thefirstnamt d requires to be cleaned out for a length of 21 chains, and the outfall culvert required. r lhe cost of this work will lv about £5. Pile water service which Mr Just asks for will be about nine chains long and will have three stand pipes, and will Le connected from the service on the old racecourse re-serve. Tho cost will be about. £2o. inclusive of water meter. Ihe \\ nlis street- work was referred tc the Public Works Committee. It was decided to inform Mr Just that the Council did not see its way to clean out drains. Tin connecting his place with water v. as left to the Public Works Committee. Ihe tender of R. and E.
