While blackleg is now thoroughly under control in Taranaki (only 25 out of 64,809 ralves vaccinated last year having died of the diseaeo), it has, unfortunately (states the Agricultural Departments annual report), made its appearance in the Auckland province, 49 outbreaks having been recorded, the localities being very widespread. It is thought by the live stock division of the Department that the cause of the trouble is the use years ago of unsterilised bone manure, imported from India. This assumption is supported by the knowledge that the specific organism of blackleg can retain its vitality in the soil for several year*.
