BUTTER FOR FRISCO.
THE QUESTION OF FREIGHTS. AUCKLAND AND WELLINGTON SHIPMENTS. (Per Pheß» Association.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. Mr Harris (Waitemata) asked the Minister for Agriculture to-day whether his attention had been called to the substantial advantage conferred upon Wellington as against Auckland shippers of butter to San Francisco and Vancouver whereby the former are enabled to ship at a through freight ol Id per pound, whereas Auckland shippers under existing arrangements hav« to pay 1 l-o to lid per pound, according to the route u*ed for the same service ; and whether he will take immediate steps to see that both Wellington and Auckland shippers are placed upon exactly the same footing? The Hon. Mr Massey (Minister ol Agriculture) made the following statement in reply:—"The position is that Wellington shippers cannot send butter, to Vancouver or San Francisco unless it happens that the space is not wanted for butter consigned to San Francisco, and as a matter of fact the whole of the space up to and including December i* required for San Francisco shipments. It is understood that Auckland shipper? may send butter to San Francisco via Vancouver at a freight of Id per pound provided that the space is not required for butter consigned to Vancouver. The Union Company is being asked to confirm this understanding, but in view oj the present promise of the trade both to Vancouver and San Francisco ther* seems but little prospect of butter being taken to either of these ports for transhipment to the other.
