ENGINEER'S REPORT.

The Engineer (Mr Hickford) reported as Tucvduv' 0 — mectin ? of the above on

Sandon Riding.—The road grader has completed the work of trimming up McDonel! s and Richardson's roads, and also a portion ot the Cemetery road. We have deferred tne metalling on the Fox tonoandoii road till next season. Mt. Stewart Riding.-I have put on H.jout 126 yards of metal on the various streets and roads near Feilding, and have strapped the bridge over .the Mangaone creek on tho Rakehou road, and also repaired Lee's line at, the Feilding er.d. Waitohi Riding.—The road grader has ieen trimming up and cleaning out watertables along the Sandon-Awahuri road. I have carted about 132 yards of metal during the last two months for repairing weak places on Penny's and Bank's Waitohi roads, which are completely worn out and must he attended to without delay. It will require at least 500 cubic yards of metal to put tiiese two roads in order.

Rongotea Riding—Very little has been done in this riding during the past month. The IR-jrich concrete pipe culvert has been put in opposite Yallendcr's, and the surface men are now employed trimming up Jones I'fr'd. The continuation of the Ivopane rc. d to the Oroua river has been surveyed. ;.!■;<l I would recommend the Council t<> <;.!1 tenders for this work immediately. I made an inspection of Leon's line as requested bv Cr. Hunt. There is t distance of 15 chains that require forming up to giv«» Mr Duke an outlet to the main road, and my estimate for tho work is £l2, including culverts. Kawakawa Riding.—The metalling has now been completed, together with the stone-breaking along the whole length of the I aikorea road. The blacksmith's shop at Rangiotu is completely on the existing road. Cr. Gray and I mado an inspection of the surroundings near the shop, and I think came to the conclusion that there is no immediate hurry to liave < the shop removed. I have had the road grader at work at the Palinerstoji-Foxton road, and have considerably improved the road. MiMartin has not yet commenced his., contract for widening the cutting on Kellow's line, but he expects to make a start in a few days. Mr IT. Hammond is about to make the new road through liis /iroperty to Kellow's line, and would like the Council to got. out the plans and specifications for this work as soon as possible.

Carnarvon Riding.—Very little has been done in this riding during tiie past month. The eleven chains of metalling authorised some time back has been completed, and about 60 yards of metal have boon carted to fill in the ruts along the old metalled portion of the Puki Puki road. Avvahou Riding.—Repairs hare been effected throughout this riding on the various roads, in the shape of filling in ruts and holes. I have had shout 25 chains of the Fox ton Beach road banked up to the edge"of metal, and a man is now employed filling in ruts and putting the road in order.
