BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tho fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was .held last night. Present: The Mayor" and Crs. Boa To, Broad. Bennett, Jacksm, Voss, S«*ifort and Wood. An apolofv for absenco was received from Cr. Crabb.

CORRESPONDENCE. From 11. N. Watson, stating that he was informed that. in laying off the new road from Te Awe Awe street to the rille range the Council had loft one jink between his property and the road so as to bar his access to the road. It sinned unlikely that thta had been done, but he was informed. He did not want the road, which had not benefited his property, and he could not < oneei\ o a::y reason why such a thing should have Lien doiio. Mr Watson asked if this was n true statement of tho case? t;nd if so the reason for it. —In answer to the Mayor, tile Engineer said a. spaeo of one link had been left, and thi* had been done to prevent anyone receiving the benefit of a load made by someone else. ENGINEERS RKJ'ORT

The Borough Engineer reported :- -

During the past fortnight the following footways have been top-dressed with a coitinir of tar and sand -Ferguson stiver from Fitzherbert street to Botanical road; College street, from Fitzlierberi <irM to Botanical road/ Joseph street, bmh sides, the total lenj'.tll served beintr 4.15 miles.

The work of re-forming ilie rtmdwav in Main street West from thf railway station I to Sliort street is being prooeeled with, and opportunity i« being taken to improve the roadway westwards in West street with the spare material from the first-mentioned place. Also the old ditch in West stnvr bus been filled in with similar material. The water main near Short street i no.v being lowered. The formation of the new footway in Ferguson street is proceeding satisfactorily. The Council's workmen have completed the construction of the main sower in Alexandra street, and arc now ennjged on that in Avenue street, which will oxtend for a distance of 14 chains lro&i Alexandra straet.
