Dr. Arthur Wade, an oil expert, sails for Australia this week, via Singapore. He is going via Papua, where Mr L. Wrothall, of the Royal School of Mines, prospects for petroleum while Mr Wade is investigating Australia on •behalf of the Commonwealth.

Tlie Calumet copper miners resumed rioting, and fierce fighting ensued between tho sheriffs and their deputies and tho miners. A girl was shot dead and many wero injured. The militia finally restored order.

(London Times.—Sydney Sun Special.) LONDON, Sept. 2. At » final sitting of the Transport Workers' Federation, Herr Muller, of Germany, opposed any form of compulsory arbitration because, it hampered the freedom of the trades unions, limiting the right to strike. Mr Havelock Wilson did not believe Britain would accept compulsory arbitration. The matter was referred to tho International Council for decision.
