The Government statistician estimates tho area sown in wheat for tho current season to be 3.731.000 acres, an increase of 763.698 acres compared with the previous year. It is anticipated that 3,136,000 acres of grain were reaped and 594,450 acres of hay were cut. MELBOURNE. Sept. 2. It is understood that tho Government intends to abandon a considerable number of measures this session, which will probably close before the end of the month. BRISBANE, Sept, 2. Bishop Sharp has returned from a visit to Paptia. He states that mission work is progressing, steadily. The Anglican Church has three thousand converts in Papua. Received September 2. 9.35 a.m MELBOURNE, Sept. 2. The Federal Government introduces a Bill during the current week authorising tho Commonwealth to take over Norfolk Island. Returns shew that the week end and deferred cablo systems are being extensively availed of. particularly by the press. Lord Denman (Governor-General) was a competitor in the Oaklands Hunt Club I oint-to-|>oint Steeplechase. Although lie rodo well he was beaten.
