0% Thursday the 9tli spent the day in a reconnoitring scheme, which involved about twelve miles' riding. They crossed the Manawatu river and proceeded over the hills towards Otope, and during the journey various manoeuvres were gone through.
Yesterday, over practically the same area, a squadron tactical scheme, consisting of reconnaissance and the transmission of information, was carried out. Heavy rain hampered the operations to some extent. The Wanganui Band arrived at Oringi last night and the qamp will be open to the public on Sunday, when, if the weather is fine, a pleasant time should be spent by visitors "and soldiers alike. EXAMINATIONS FOR OFFICERS. * V (Pih Prisb Association.) WELLINGTON, May 9. Following are the regulations for competitive examinations for the first appointments to commission in the territorial force: — (1) Competitive examination for firtft appointment as second lieutenant in territorial forces will be held annually in July. (2) Successful candidates at. these examinations will be eligible for first appointments only during the current year in which the examination is held. As vacancies for second lieutenants in the' several units occur they will be filled by the candidates next in order of merit at the examination. (3) A candidate who fails to obtain a commission during the year in which he passed hia examination will require t.o compete again at an examination in the ensuing year if he is still desirous of promotion to the rank of second lieutenant. (4) A candidate must be a member of the territorial forces and of the rank of corporal or higher, and be between the ages of 18 and 25, -inclusive. A senior cadet who holds the rank of sergeant, in the senior cadets when he is posted to the territorial forces also is eligible to comP'- re.
(5) A candidate for examination will apply through .his commanding officer; such applications to be accompanied by —(a) His record of service; (b) a medical c rtiftcate; (c) a certificate bv his commanding officer that the candidate is fitted in ew.ry way to promotion to the rank of s 'C:>::d lieutenant as regards his competei.rv to command, instruct and train his men.
