OLD PEOPLE'S HOME.
RESULT OF COMPETITIVE DESIGNS.
Tho Chief Architect's (Mr Campbell) decision as to the competitive design submitted for the proposed Old People's liome was given to the Hospital Board at its meeting yesterday by l)r. FrcngI:*y. who brought the plans up from Wellington, and they were compared with the numbered envelopes giving the names of the designers. Out of fourteen plans submitted it was found that the plan* of Messrs Here and Busby had been selected as best, and consequently were entitled to iirst prize. The building that they had designed could be erected at an estimated cost of £BOOO. Design No. 6, Messrs Penty and Lawrence's, had been (selected as next best, the estimated c<*t of the building being £9500. Dr, Frenglev said that none of the designs submitted could be executed for anything under £SOOO, consequently all must be placed under the same category a* regards the exceeding of the stipulated cost.
I)r. Frengley also stated, in answer t > a question, that either of the two plans chosen would be approved of by the Department if necessary and submitted to the Minister for his approval. Mr Campbell had stated that by lessening the thickness of the walls in either of ,the plans the cost of the buildings could be reduced by about £SOO. The Board briefly considered the matter and decided to ask Drs. Frenglev and Valintine to meet the Board's executive for the purposes of discussing :iny modifications in the plans, as the Hoard proposed calling tenders for tho erection of the building forthwith. The executive was also empowered to call tenders in time for the next meeting of the Board, providing the Inspec-tor-General intimt'ed tho necessary modifications required.
