Waitcmat.ii until his. retirement-in, 1902: The lale Mr Monk was 81 years of ago. He was born 'in Lancashire,; but' his parents brought'' hiiii to New Zealand at a very early ago.. In 1849, at the ago of, seventeen, Mr Monk ' accompanied his: father to the California diggings, He returned to New Zealand after a time and entered into business as proprietor of a sash and door factory, subsequently being connected with the Mercury Bay Timber' Company, In 1881" Mr' Monk first stood '.for Parliament as a candidate for ,tlio Parnell seat, but was defeated. Five years Jater he was elected as member for Waitcmata. He was defeated-in tho. great struggle of 1890, and was elected in 1893, but was'unseated. From 1895 to 1902 he represented the constituency continuously in tho Opposition interest. • , By (the'death of Mr C. Hood-Williams t last week Canterbury lost one of its best known public men. The deceased gentleman, who was secretary and treasurer of the Lyitelton Harbour Board, had been in failing health for some months past. He was born, in Edinburgh in 1844 and came to New Zealand in the ship Randolph with his father,; the late Mr D. T. Williams, 8.A., arriving in Port Cooper in 1850. Mr Williams i was educated at Christ's College. Ghristchurch. He entered the service of the Bank of Australasia in 1861, and after three! years he left the bank on account of illhealth. .In 1864 he .'entered the Provincial Government service as clerk. Under the secretaryship'of the la'e Hon. W. Rolleston, from 1873. to ,1877, Mr Williams occupied the position of assistant secretary, and on the abolition of the provinces he was appointed secretary,and treasurer of the Lyttelton. Harbour Board, which position he held up,to the'time of his death, a period of thirty-five years. Mr Williams took a life-long interest in sporting and athletics, He'was married in 1873 to-a daughter of Mr R. 11. Allarcl. of Christchurch, and leaves a widow, three daughters and one son.. ; > • • , .
