Burt, M.P., in a circular to tho Northumberland miners, denounced tho Irish railway strike as' arbitrary and illtimed, and thus weakening an otherwise strong caso for recognition of tho union. Mr Ramsay Mac Donald, in the Socialist Review, strongly attacks syndicalism and' the general strike theory, ■ TWO SIDES OF A QUESTION. Received October 5, 9,50 a.m. SYDNJ3Y, Oct. 5. The Broken Hill miners telegraphed to tho Lyell strikers not to go to Broken Hill as hundreds were out of work. The mine managers, however, declare that work is. seriously hampered by lack of labour. ;
Received October 5, 9.40 a.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 4. The Lyell Conference sat in camera and adjourned to-day without a, settlement. Tho executive _of tho Amalgamated Miners' Association at Melbourne decided to support tho strikers.
FATAL RIOTS IN AMERICA. Received October 5, 9.40 a.m. NEW YORK, Oct. 4. Fatal riots continue in connection with tho railway strike. Pistols were used at McComb, Mississippi. A striker was killed and many dangerously injured. A regiment of the National Guard has been ordered out to restore order, A train carrying strike-breakers was riddled with bullets when passing the town. A few were hurt.
NATIONALISATION OF RAILWAYS URGED,
Received October 5,9,30 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 4. A meeting of tlia Amalgamated Railwaymen's Society at Carlislo resolved in favour of nationalisation of railways, an eight-hour day for railwaymen, and reform of labour exchanges in order that they should not be used against trade union interests,
IRISH SETTLEMENT. Recoived October 5, 10.20 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 4. The Great Southern and Western strike has been settled, the men withdrawing their claim not to handle "blackleg" goods, and apologising for striking. The company will reinstate the locomotive men, and ninety per cent of the others, and will retain the men employed during tho strike.
CONSTERNATION AT CREWE,
LONDON, Oct. 4.
Consternation has been created at Crewe by the London' and North-Western Railway Company discharging.7oo men, being 10 per cent of the staff. Short time has been in operation there for thirtythreo months, and ono of tho objects of the strike was to secure full time. The company explained that the Crewe staff is too large.
