DEAR FOOD RIOTS.

ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY FOR COLONIAL MEAT.

(By Eleotrio Telkobapb-Copjbioht < (Peb Press Ahbociation.i PARIS, Sept. 4. Emissaries of the General Confederation of Labour participated in the worst, outrages at Saint Omentin. Six regiments were quartered there, including, the Currassiors who were at Epernay during; the champagno riots, and Chasseurs from Rouen and detachments of- artillery. The situation was saved by tho mayors of several neighbouring towns buying bullocks, slaughtering- and selling the meat at a reasonable price. Evidence before the Commission of Inquiry shows that the rapidly increasing exportation of cattle is largely responsible for dear meat. Consumers advocate the unrestricted importation of colonial meat, and suggest the free importation of a limited number from Nigeria and Madagascar. . Fresh rioting has occurred at Kobaiz, Brest, Chalonsurleine, and Le. Creusot. M. Caillaux has ordered more stringent measures against the professional agita-. tors.

■THE WORKERS' PLAN. (Peb Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 5. Tho Waterside Workers committee appointed to consider tho excessive cost of tho necessaries of life reported that it had failed to discover any remedy that could be deemed practicable so long as the production remains in the hands of a class. They urged tho workers to organise industrially and politically upon a claps basis, so that they would bo able to supplant the present system of distributing the necessaries of life with a system of national democratic ownership which alone could removo the anomaly complained of. The report was adopted without discussion.
