Mr A. E. Copping, managing-editor of | the Stratford Post, was a passing visitor to Palmerston yesterday. Mr Sydney George Millington, Yvho has been gaoler at the Terrace Prison, Wei-. lington ■'■ for the past two years, died at his ■-.residence.on. Thursday morning, at the. ago of 59.. The many friends of Mr George McCarty will 'be'ploaeed to learn that Mrs McCarty, who has passed through a very serious illness, is now pronounced out m danger, and is on a fair way to early convalescence. Tho death is announced of Mr Gerald O'Reilley, one of the oldest and best known settlers of tho Waverlcy district. The late Mr O'Reilley, who was 75 years of age, came out to New Zealand -in his early youth. After some'years of farm life at Momahaki, ho removed to Waverley, where he has since resided. The employees of Mr H. L, Young's printery presented their fellow worker, Mr T. Jaffray, with a handsome marble clock and silver salt sellar last night, on the occasion of his approaching marriage. Mr H L. Young made the presentation on behalf of himself and staff, and spoke of tho popularity of Mr Jaffray, and extended to him tho best wishes of himself and staff for his future happiness and welfare. Mr Jaffray suitably replied. An old resident of Poverty Bay recently passed away in the person of Mrs Andrew, at. the. age/of 87 years. She ..and her husband came out to' New Zealand about. 55 years' ago, her husband being employed In the copper mines at the; Big Barrier island, near Auckland. .La* they had to leave Drury on account of tho outbreak of Maori hostilities, and wo for some time in .the. Thameevgoldfield, Mr :,' and Mrs Andrew"spent their .remaining years at Gißborne. * Mr Harry Naylor, son of.Mr C. W. Naylor, of Palmerston Northland wellknown in Wanganui hockey circles, has been transferred to the .Palmerston Branch of tho Westport Coal Company. Ho was farewelled on Wednesday evening ■■■■ at Wanganui by the various organisations connected with St; Paul's **¥?**■ Church. Mrs on ; behalf of the. Young Women's Guild,: presented him with a set of Shakespeare's works \Mw Abererombic, on behalf of the Young Woman's Bible Class, Panted him with a volume of poems,-.and Mr McKenzie, on behalf of the office, bearers nv the church and tho Young Men's Bible Class, presented him with a handsome watch. Mr Wor feelingly replied. At the conchacheers for Mr Naylor were given. Mr C A. Poulsen, who has for tho past ' two years been a member of the literary staff'of the Wairarapa Daily Times, and who is well and favourably known in this . district, will take up the panto of chief reporter on the "Standard"'at th.end of July, Mr W.
