NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW.

EIGHTH ANNUAL FIXTURE,

PUBLIC. SCHOOL GARDENS,

In tliis'division tho exhibits lire- distinctly creditable to tho schools represented. The displays indicnto tho resuits of garden experiments and nature study collections undortakon during tlio current year, embracing producls of the soil, observation charts, and other details carried out by tho Board of Education for tho district in which tho school

is situate. The awards have been considered on the following basis; For each group of vegetables grown under dilt'erent conditions as to manure, cultivation and variety and appropriately labelled, three points for each distinct kind.

Tho following wero tho schools represented:— Jackoytown, lliwinui, Ulicllonham, Foxton, Ashlmrst, Kairanga; and it, must be acknowledged that tho exhibits aro on the whole somewhat above tho avorage. The vegetables and roots exhibited comprise mangolds, beet, turnips, swedes, parsnips, carrots, potatoes, cabbages, cauliflowers, peas, beans and onions, There wore also exhibits of drawings from nature, collections of dried grasses, collections of weeds, pressed, mounted and named, collection of other nature exhibits, nature calendars and limps of school gardens. A few years ago very few schools in tho Dominion could make anything npcrouching such a display in this section, i,,r the pupils had not been instructed in thoso particular branches, which are. now taught in almost every school. In carrot© and parsnips the Cheltenham school showed out particularly creditably. In turnips the lliwinui school was the only exhibitor, and it and the Cheltenham school alono produced samples of potatoes. Jackcytown, Hiwinui, Cheltenham and Kairanga each exhibited in car. rots and parsnips. 'Mon (is a whole the colled ion of roots and vegetables was in most instances considerably above tho average. Tho drawings, which were of a varisd class, were well executed, showing considerable skill in execution. Kairanga was awarded first in mangolds and beet; Cheltenham first in onions; Jackcytown 'first in c.irrofs, The collection of weeds by the schools evidenced that considerable study had been dovoted to the subject. Tho weather records for the year, with length of shadow, etc., formed a somewhat novel feature, and one which, until comparatively recently, but a limited amount of attention was devoted. The plans of school grounds and school buildings were well executed, showing very neat work. There were also samples of timber, exhibits of insects and small "reptiles" pre. served in spirits, diied grasses, with various other exhibits of a special class, making up what may bo considered a credilablo and interesting section. If might have been better, perhaps, had a larger number of schools been iepie;enhd, us the public school gardens division is always a section in which the public manifests considerable interest, feeling convinced that it comprises branches of study that aro likely to prove practical and serviceable in every rural community.

NATURAL history; Tho Natural History section was jov .open competition, schools being eligible to compete. There were threo classes. one being for a collection of dried grasses, grown in the provincial districts of Wellington, Hawke's Bay and Taranaki, There were only two entries in this class. Messrs P. G. Jackson and A. 0. Buchler. Mr P. G. Jackson was awarded first prize. Tho second section, which, however, lias been left out of tho_ official catalogue, was for best collection of weeds. In this section Messrs P. G. Jackson, A. 0. Buchler and L. L. Aitkcn were awarded Ist, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. The third class under this division was a competition for a prize of throe guineas, offered by the Manawatu Philosophical Society for the best collection of botanical specimens, which may be limited J.o one or more orders, from the district bounded by the Turakina and Olaki rivers and the Tararua- mountains. There was only one entry, Mr A. G. Roe. The conditions were that' the collect ions he certified as ma do by the exhibitor within (he area described; but the collector may obtain assistance in naming and classifying. The specimens must bo properly mounted and named; and the prize collection is to remain in the possession of tho Manawatu Philosophical Society for twelve months. The judge's comment with regard to the exhibit, of best collection of botanical specimens (the judge being Mr T. W. Kirk, Director of Orchards, Gardens and Aviaries) was as follows:—"This collection has some very good features, such as the arrangement, of foliage, various i stages of growth, in order to illustrate tho startling difference between juvenile and adult forms. It, will bo better in future that ono species only be mounted on each sheet. Some of the specimens, moreover, had been insufficiently dried. It is to be regretted that ibis handsome prize does not bring forth greater competition." In tho exhibit of collection of grasses the same jmbre wrote: "llopo to fee greater competition year. Tho entry to which first prize has been awarded is ?ood, but I trust to seo it elaborated Ijofore next appearance." fohtabZ2.il. shrdl shrdl shrdl lishrdlrd HOME INDUSTRIES DIVISION. Judge, Mr W. S.
