In the case in which Mrs Proudfoot, wifo of the head of the Victoria Institution at Kualalumpur, was charged with the shooting of a man named Steward, a friend of the family, who is alleged to have made violent advances while the. woman was in her bungalow, with no assistance handy, tho defence pleaded that Mrs Proudfoo't's hysterical and mental equilibrium was upset by Steward's assault, and that she did not know what happened after tho first shot was fired. Tho jury found accused guilty, and she was sentenced to death, with a recommendation to mercy.
