At the half-yearly meeting of the Kauri Timber Company, the Chairman, in clc-. daring a dividend for the half-year at- a rate of 8 per cent, per annum, referred to the statement made at the previous: meeting that there was a fulling off.'-.-of profits. last year, which lie attributed:' to having to cut up a large quantity of inferior logs, and that lie thought that' ill the future, though there was stilt some of the samo logs to cut ;ip, their influence on the output, would hi- a diniin- ■ ishing one. Tho figures for the last -six-' months showed that his anticipations wc'r.e : > being realised, and they were row in i: position to keep tho mills supplied with a better average of logs. In anticipation of the exhaustion of the kauri bush in the not very distant future it had been the policy of the company for some years past to strengthen their interests; in other New Zealand timbers, with a. view to protecting tho life of the com.-, pany. Tho recent rains in New Zealand 1 had brought down a' supply of logs, (ini; abling them to start some of the idle mills and keep going for a few moniihsi; The business of the past six months was very active and there were sufficient; orders to hand to lead them to expect: that tho turnover this year would be coii-. siderably in excess of last year.
