AN EXHIBITION OF WATER COLOUR SKETCHES.
An opportunity is now being afforded to the public of Palmerston North to sec isomo of Mr Noel Barraud's water-colour sketches, a collection of which will bo on view in Messrs G. 11. Bennett and Co.'a show room for the next few weeks. Although Mr Barraud has been a resident of Palmerston for many years, his work as an artist was known to comparatively few of his fellow townsmen, as it was never exhibited in public. During the past few years, whilst travelling in Europe and residing in England, Mr Barraud has been busy with his brush and studing the art which he has always devoted his Jeisure time hitherto, and 6orae of the results of his industry are now being exhibited. • We understand that the works now being shown, are almost without exception painted direct from nature —although one of the critics of Mr Barraud's work, at a recent, exhibition, in. Wellington, wrote "that the. degreo. of finish in the sketches showed that, -.the-artist--'. made his studio in the open air.'.' Without attempting any. detailed.criticism- of'the works now exhibited, we may fay that (hoy of a high order of merit, tho work being forcible, clean, and fresh. The subjects are very varied,; and . include landscapes in England and on tho .Continent," as well ■ as some "New Zealandscones, ; Whilst having' a keen'' cyo for the".' picturesque and beautiful in" nature, Mr Barraud evidently delights more .in tryintr to render transitory'-'effects of siui'shine: and :'atmos- ; phere, than in mere ..'literal transcriptions of scenery. _ v > : . . " The paintings exhibited aro, all for sale, and as we notice that the prices are very low : for the 'quality of the work, wo have no. boubt but -that many of them will.- find buyers. Wo strongly recommend our read- ■: crs to pay a visit to Messrs Bennett and. . Co.'s show, room and inspect this interesting. exhibition of Mr Barraud's work v
