Sir Ernest Shackleton, in a letter to the Daily Mail, makes a warm appeal for £12,000 to enable his former colleague, Dr. Mawson, of Sydney University, 'to purchase a ship and 6tart for tho Antarctic in June. Sir Ernest declares that Australia has done much financially and scientifically towards Antarctic exploration. ._ Tho Daily Mail, in endorsing the appeal, says that "one good turn deserves another," BERLIN, May 8. The Deutschland, with Lieut. Flicker and other members of his expedition, has sailed from Bremenhaven. • .

NORDENSKJOLD CRITICISES HIS ' COUNTRYMEN;

Professor Nordonskjold, a noted Swedish writing in ( tho Swedish Press, questions the propriety of Captain Amundsen encroaching on' Captain Scott's sphere.of travel in Antarctic regions. Unless Captain Amundsen, he says, has ulterior scientific motives in his competitive, dash, far the.. South 'Pole, then ,it would be 'difficult' for 'the Scandinavian explorer to find any excuse for the extreme secrecy 'that l existed regarding his plans. .. If Captain Scott,; on his arrival at the Polo, found- that; Amundsen had reached it a week boforehand by taking advantage of tho British route and previous British discoveries, then it would be no great honour for Amundsen to have reached his objective.
