FARMERS' UNION.
SOME REMITS FROM LEVIN,
{Per Pbess Association.) LEVIN, May 8, . The Levin branch' of the . Farmers' Union has resolved to forward a remit to the annual conference of the Union 'protesting against rating farmers on tho' unimproved value of their lands instead of on income, as merchants and othersare rated. The branch suggests that farmers should bo, taxed at 5 per cent, on tho capital value of their holdings after deducting all encumbrances in tho shape of mortgages. : ' 1 The branch heartily supports Sedgwick's, boy- immigrant scheme. It protested against tho Maori'Councii's right to register dogs, expressing the view that the dual right possessed by the Maori Councils and Pakeha local bodies led to looseness, and . made the task of tracing sheep-worrying dogs moro difficult than need be.
The meeting expressed the opinion that the Union should take no official part in regard to either political party, as to do so would be disastrous. Finally, it resolved that the Levin Branch protests against any official endorsement by the Union of either the Farmers' Protection League or the Political League, Canterbury or Auckland branch. The meeting also affirmed that ro further labour legislation should, be passed.
