AMATEUR .CONTESTS,

The amateur champion sculling raco resulted: McVilly (Tasmania) 1, Towns (N.S.W.) 2. Stevens (Victoria) 3. 'Only starters. Won by four lengths . _ In the 8-oar race New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Westralia, and Queensland were represented. , New South Wales led from the start, and won by two and a-half lengths. Victoria and Tasmania had a magnificent tussle for second place, never halt a length separating them. Victoria finished a third of a length ahead, and South Australia, a length away fourth. Westralia and Queensland were outclassed after a mile and a-half. It was described as the most spectacular, race ever witnessed for over a mile, five of the boats being abreast all the way, and led by the winners. The time was 17min6 24sccs.

ARNST'S expenses.

SYDNEY, May 7. Arnst has received a cable from Tom. Sullivan, asking what expenses h.e. would want to row Barry on the Thames. He replied £750, Barry to take-.all the gate.
