SHANNON.
On Tuceday night the Debating Society held a mock borough council meeting, which proved both highly successful and amusing, there being standing room only. Mr W. Murdock filled tho position of Mayor with dignity, in spite of the attempts made to take away his character. Mr W. H. Gunning proved himself a capable county engineer, whoso report contained a. good "deal of sound common sense. Mr W. Clayton, as inspector of nuisonces, was in his clement. Mr J. Tilling acted as town clerk, and Messrs Hensman, Perry, Bovis, Judd, Gardiner, and Selby made admirable councillors. Tho whole of tho proceedings were conducted in a verj. humorous fashion, as was testified by tho great amount of laughter. The common-sense part of the business, however, was introduced Mr F. : W. Venn, who moved the following mo-. tion: (l)That immediate steps betaken; to petition tho Post and Tologranh Department ro securing the old Shannon Post Office as a public (2) that the younger members of the community 'be urged to tako a more active and practical interest in the improvement of the recreation reserve; (5) that negotiations bo mads with the Mayor and councillors of Foxton, with a' view to coming to a mutual agreement whereby the towns of Foxton and Shannon may be provided with a permanent water supply for domestic purposes; (4) that steps be taken to raise a loan under tho Loans to Local Bodies Act for the purpose of metalling the unmetalled streets within the 'township of Shannon. Next week Mr A»- Schmidt willmovc, that the second chamber should be elected by popular ballot. Mr J. Murray will oppose the motion, Mr D. M. Couper, of tho Kingston Road,, lias disposed of his property in the Kingston Road to Mr Gordon, who will take possession at the beginning of June. Mr Couper has purchased a sheep rim at Waitotara. Miss Gingell has recently purchased Mr Perreau's tea rooms in Shannon. •
BUNNYTHORPE.. On Wcdnosday the Tennis Club held a most successful concert and dance in aid of tho new court. Quito a large audience greeted the performers. The first part consisted of songs and recitations, and the second part was given by thelatelyformed Dramatic Society, who produced a piece entitled "Withered Leaves." Great praise is due to those ladies and gentlemen for the way they carried out thoir parts. The performers were as follows:-"Sir Conyers Conyers," Mr J M. Sinclair; "Lady Conyers," Miss E. Holland; "Tom Conyers," Mr C. Neaber; "May Rivers,". Miss driver; "Arthur Middleton," Mr H. M. Row; "Cecil Vane," Mr P. Tullock. The pianist was Mrs E. H. Holland. The stage, representing a park, was specially prepared for the occasion by Mr C. Noaber and Mr P. Tullock, who had given a. great deal of time to tho work, and they deserve great credit for their efforts. From tho rise of the curtain those taking part went through every item without a flaw, showing they were perfect in their parts, and at the close of tho piece gained loud applause. The following contributed items, in tho first part:— Overture, Miss Stewart; recitation, Mr R. Sutherland;.6ong (comic), Mr■ Young;, song, Miss Wolvin; recitation, Mr Ollivor; song, Miss Whittle (encored); song, Mr Young (encored); comic speech, Mr Olliver. After .the concert the 'ball was cleared, and dancing' was indulged in till 2 o'clock, a most enjoyable time being spent. The duties of M.s'C. were ably carried out by Messrs C. Neabor and H. Divhall. Miss A. Schudt and tho committee, too numerous to mention, de. servo many thanks for their efforts to mako the gathering a success,
