RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.

ITp THE EDITOH.) Sir,—l see in last night's "Standard"' a complaint by one of the railway employees re the bad lighting at the local railway yard. I have heard many complaints about the lighting on the platform, and I am surprised there has not been an action for damages before thi6, as it is the usual thing on.the arrival of all trains from 8 p.m.' to 9.30 to put out all, lights on the platform before the passengers havo time to get their luggage, and the carrier who gets a job has to strike matches to see the address on any goods he may have to pick up to deliver. I saw one man myself walk right on to a barrow that was standing on the platform, and the train had not pulled out from tho platform. Then, again, on the Wellington train, due at 9.5 with;the mail, it is a common thing for the van with the mails in to have no light, and the contractor has to take, the light oil his express to get his mails, and there arc always a great number of hampers to be, sorted over to get at the Palmerston hampers. It is no small job to be scrambling about amongst cases of samples and other goods to get the mail all in the dark. I have 6een the stationmaster bring a porter's lamp'for us to look for the mail hampers, but if you ask some of the staff' they have no lamp to lend. It does not improve one's temper to be erasing about in the dark. This is what sarcastic people call railway management. Hoping to see better lighting at the-local station, and not such meanness with the gas for the future, as the powers that bo are not so mean in some other things.—l am, otc. 3. T. HUNT, Mail ■ Contractor.
